Frequently Asked Questions & Misconceptions about AFA
Isn't that the school for the "bad kids?"
Absolutely not. What we are is a school for students who for a variety of reasons were not reaching their full potential in a traditional school setting.
In 2023, more than 30% of our graduates are projected to earn their Diploma+ endorsement. Additionally, three of our 2023 graduates have been recognized as the District Student of the Month while at AFA.
If I go to AFA, can I still play sports at my old school?
Yes, AFA students can still participate in sports at their former high school IF they meet the academic requirements to do so, i.e. passing a minimum of 5 classes the previous semester.
Aren't all the classes on Edgenuity there?
Nope. Nearly all our classes are taught by certified teachers who create daily, student-centered lessons in classes of 12-18 students. However, we do offer some courses on Edgenuity for credit recovery.
How can I get my student into AFA?
If you are interested in having your high school student attend AFA, speak with your students' school counselor, contact the Coordinator of Alternative Education in Student Services, or contact us here at AFA to get the process going.
How many students are able to attend?
Our capacity at AFA is 85 Students. We take new students at the start of the year as well as at the midpoint of the year. We typically have around 40-45 new spots for the Fall and 20-30 new spots for the Spring. Spots become available through students completing their credits for graduation as well as by students being dismissed for not making adequate progress.
What if my student is not successful at AFA?
We want all our students to be successful, so we offer multi-tiered systems of support academically, as well as social-emotionally, to meet our students where they are at to support them in their growth. However, if these supports are not successful we work with Student Services and the Alternative Services Coordinator to explore other alternative options such as Virtual Academy, JobCorp, Youthbuild and GED programs.
